10 tips for creating the perfect garden hangout

Updated: Jul 3, 2023

Having a beautiful garden can be a great way to spend quality time with your friends and family. There are many ways to make your garden the place you and your friends want to be. From planting the right plants, adding a table or outdoor kitchen, providing shade, and adding decking - there are lots of options available. Whatever you decide to do, these top 10 tips will help you create a garden that is both beautiful and inviting.

1. Add flowers and plants to create a lively and inviting atmosphere. You can choose varieties that attract butterflies and bees like Lavender and Salvia.

2. Create a cozy seating area with comfortable cushions, pillows, and blankets. You can use a pergola, gazebo, or umbrella to provide some shade and privacy. You can also hang some lanterns, fairy lights, or candles to create a romantic mood at night.

3. Build or buy a fire pit or a barbecue grill to enjoy great BBQ food with your friends. You can also set up a table and chairs for dining al fresco. Don’t forget to have some marshmallows or baked bananas with chocolate for the kids.

4. Grow herbs, fruits, and vegetables in your garden to add some freshness and flavor to your dishes. You can also use them to make some refreshing drinks such as lemonade, mint tea, or mojitos.

5. Make your outdoor living space more inviting by adding a hammock, swing, or outdoor couch. Create the perfect spot to relax in your garden oasis. These cozy spots are perfect for reading, listening to music, or taking a refreshing nap. Enjoy some leisure time outdoors!

6. Add some fun and games to your garden such as a croquet set, a giant chess game or Jenga tower. These activities will keep your family and friends entertained and engaged for hours.

7. Build or buy an insect hotel or a bird feeder or birdhouse to attract some feathered friends to your garden. You can also provide some seeds, nuts, or fruits for them to enjoy.

8. Make your garden more eco-friendly by using organic fertilizers, composting your waste, and collecting rainwater. You can also plant some native species that are adapted to your climate and soil. These practices will help you conserve water, reduce pollution, and support biodiversity.

9. Install a water feature such as a small pond, fountain or birdbath to add some soothing sounds and movement to your garden. You can also decorate it with rocks, pebbles, or statues for a natural look.

10. Build a simple trellis and have grapevines create a natural privacy screen. I made one myself for under CHF 30 for two grapevines and one kiwi tree. I used 3 x pieces of rectangular wood, 3,5 x 3,5 cm and an old plank that I cut in 4 x pieces with my circular saw. I impregnated it with Organowood to be sure of no unhealthy chemicals close to the grapes. I used my hammer drill to make 3 holes in the ground for the poles that I sharped before I hammered them down in the ground to 25 cm depth. Attached the 4 x pieces of wood horizontally with screws. Done.
